NMBI-Approved Post-Registration Nursing and Midwifery Programmes in Ireland

NMBI have published standards and requirements for Nursing and Midwifery post-registration programmes and graduate entry programmes currently available in Ireland.

Nurses who wish to apply for post-registration programmes in specific disciplines must meet the minimum entry requirements, (see NMBI) for the chosen post-registration programme and must achieve competence in all areas outlined in the programme.

Each post-registration programme has its own set specific theory and clinical modules which have to be successfully completed in order to pass.

Nurses must be entered on to the live register in the division of (General, Psychiatric, Intellectual Disability) dependent on the standards and requirements outlined for that particular post-registration programme.

Each programme will have its own application process (this may be joint application with the HSE and HEI).

Students may be eligible for sponsorship dependent on meeting the eligibility criteria (programme specific).

Currently the following post-registration options are available

Children’s Nursing (Higher diploma, 12 months duration)

Dublin City University

Trinity College Dublin

University College Dublin

Midwife Registration Education Post RGN Programme (18 months- 2 Years dependent on HEI)

Psychiatric/ Mental Health Nursing (1 Year)

Sponsorship is available for Nurses and Midwives who wish to undertake a postgraduate Higher Diploma Programme to become Mental Health Nurses.

Public Health Nursing (1 Year)

Sponsorship is available for NMBI registered general nurses who wish to train as public health nurses. This programme involves a joint application (HSE and HEI). Currently 3 HEIs are providing this course: University College Cork, University College Dublin and National University of Galway.
