The first week

Introduction to your new workplace

It is normal to feel a little anxious starting a new job, especially in a new country.

We in the HSE are conscious of this, and will provide supports to help you feel relaxed and confident during this period of settling in.

Your colleagues will play a major role in helping you to settle into your workplace and new community.

Meet and greet

Your hiring manager will give you an outline of what meet and greet on your first day will entail.

This may be covered in your local induction guide, which you may have received in advance of your start date.

You will be told where to meet, who you will be meeting, and what to expect from that first day.

Integration with colleagues

Your manager will help you integrate with your team, through activities such as informal coffee / lunch introductions, invitations to join WhatsApp groups etc.

As you go through your induction programme, you will become familiar with your work surroundings and will meet many of your colleagues.

Communication and workplace culture supports

Consider using the culture and communications supports if you haven’t already.

The cultural support material aims to be a helpful guide to navigating traditions and sayings that will not be familiar to you as a newcomer to Ireland.

The communication guides will be of use to you both inside and outside of the workplace. They will help you when communicating with patients and colleagues.
