University Hospital Limerick: A Leading Centre for Emergency and Specialist Care
University Hospital Limerick (UHL) stands as the Mid West region’s foremost acute care facility, providing round-the-clock emergency and critical care services. As the only Model 4 hospital in the region, UHL plays a pivotal role in delivering inpatient and outpatient medical, surgical, and emergency care to the region’s population.
The hospital is one of just eight designated specialist cancer centres in Ireland and is also home to a dedicated coronary care centre, providing life-saving treatment for serious heart attacks and strokes. Other specialist units at UHL include facilities for Cystic Fibrosis, Cardiology, Dermatology, Symptomatic Breast Disease, and Dialysis. Additionally, the hospital is at the forefront of surgical innovation, employing robotic-assisted procedures for patients.
UHL is one of six acute hospital sites within the HSE Mid West health region and has the University of Limerick (UL – www.ul.ie) as its academic partner. This collaboration fosters excellence in clinical care, medical education, and research.
The hospital’s Clinical Education and Research Centre (CERC) (pictured to the right) serves as a hub for training and innovation, housing UL’s Graduate Entry Medical School alongside advanced learning and research facilities for healthcare professionals.
Further strengthening ties between academia and healthcare, the Health Sciences Academy — an initiative between UL and HSE Mid West — operates from CERC, with a mission to enhance health and well-being across the region.
Through its commitment to advanced medical care, specialist treatment, and education, UHL continues to be a cornerstone of healthcare in the Mid West of Ireland.
