What is an Apprentice in Social Work?

The Apprentice in Social Work is a new and exciting role which allows you “earn and learn” while you qualify as a Social Worker. The HSE are seeking to build a diverse workforce with a range of lived experience.

There are two components to the apprenticeship:

  1. On-the-job working on a HSE team gaining practical experience and skills.
  2. Off the job study in UCC for NFQ Level 9 Masters of Social Work or Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work Studies.

What does the Programme offer?

The Social Worker Apprentice Programme in collaboration with UCC offers the following benefits:

  •  Secure, paid employment while you learn;
  • UCC course fees fully sponsored for the Masters of Social Work (NFQ Level 9);
  • Practical experience in real time supported by a fully qualified, CORU registered Social Work Mentor;
  • Clear career pathway – commitment to permanent employment following CORU registration.

Our Social Workers are part of a clinical workforce called Health & Social Care Professionals, who work together with medical and nursing colleagues as a team in the delivery of clinical, therapeutic and social care.

Our Social Workers work in a variety of diverse settings, to find solutions and to effect meaningful change. The problems and challenges span the life cycle and range from a crisis or emergency to providing support, information and advice to a person experiencing ongoing difficulties or loss.
