Our People in Intellectual Disability Nursing

5 Minutes with Hari Sankar Suresh, Staff Nurse

Why I chose this career?

To support people who need care more in society rather than just nursing needs.

To support individuals that require help with psychological, social, personal needs and with day-to-day care needs.

Tell us about the team you work with?

The team consists of CNM2, CNM1, staff nurses and care assistants all working together to support Service users in their day-to-day activities. We work together to ensure that all needs are met and link with the wider MDT as needed.

What does your typical working day involve?

A usual working day starts with the handover from a colleague, who gives updates and any details that require follow up or completion. I then help the service users plan their day, supporting with personal care and aiding with medical supports as needed, such as medication management and supporting medical conditions. I attend external medical appointments with the service user and support them with the after care. I prepare and assist with meals ensuring to follow guidelines in place e.g. FEDS guidelines etc. I support the service user in meeting their social needs like attending day service, going for lunch/ coffee / dinner out as per their personal choice. I also support with community activities, banking, going to the movies, shopping, farming, bowling and many other activities of choice.

What motivates you in your work?

The appreciation and acceptance of the service users towards me. The positive outcomes that I can see after an intervention that I have made in their medical needs is of benefit to them. This encourages me to continue in this role. Sometimes the smile on the service users face is just enough to keep me motivated.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

Participation in a variety of activities tailored to each service user’s preference and witness how they enjoy and benefit from such activities.

What advice would you give somebody considering a career in RNID?

The person should have a passion in taking care of individual’s who really need support with their social, physical, mental and emotional well-being. They should also have a keen interest in learning and updating knowledge and skills in the field of ID Nursing.
