How do I become a Dental Nurse?

Dental nursing is a profession within oral health services. A dental nurse supports other dental professionals in delivering high quality, patient-centred oral healthcare. Dental Departments are responsible for oral health assessments, oral health promotion, dental treatment services, and orthodontics.

Entry route to becoming a dental nurse:

  • Hold an approved qualification in Dental Nursing at a minimum Level 6 on the National Framework of Qualifications maintained by Quality and Qualifications Ireland.

Please visit the Dental Council of Ireland (DCI) for a list of approved qualifications in Dental Nursing. If you qualified outside of Ireland, there is information available on registration and qualification assessment on the website.

Additional information can be found on the Careers Portal.

The DCI maintains a register of dental nurses. Registration is voluntary.
