HSE Health Regions

The Irish health service is currently undergoing a transformation that will shape the future of health and social care in Ireland.

Six new health regions have been created to allow the Health Service Executive (HSE) to deliver safer, better care that is planned and funded in line with local and regional health needs. Each region is responsible for providing both hospital and community care for people in that area – this is known as integrated care.

The HSE remains a single organisation and the regions operate under the governance of the HSE Board.

Why we're integrating health and social care by region

The restructured health service aims to help people stay healthy in their own homes and communities for as long as possible.

This is being done by developing and improving primary and community care. This is the care people can get without having to go to hospital.

Bringing community health services and hospitals together means we can take a more patient-centred approach to healthcare.

Services working together within each region include:

– hospitals
– primary care services like pharmacies and doctors’ surgeries
– community services
– social care services
– public and private providers
– health and social care professionals
– voluntary sector services

What the health regions will do:

  • plan and deliver our services around the specific needs of people in each area
  • improve how these services are run and how people take responsibility for them
  • strengthen local decision-making by giving regions the power to plan, manage and deliver their own care
  • provide a consistent quality of care across the country, with the HSE Centre being responsible for ensuring standards across the regions

Each region has its own budget, leadership team and responsibility for local decision-making. They continue to work towards the Sláintecare objectives of delivering the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

The HSE’s values of Care, Compassion, Trust and Learning, influence everything the Health Regions do. All HSE Health Regions encourage a culture where all staff live by these values every day, as they interact and deal with colleagues and members of the public.
