Periods of Adaptation- Health and Social Care Applicants
Frequently Asked Questions
Please see below some frequently asked questions to assist when applying for a Period of Adaptation(POA) in the HSE:
What pathways exist to meet CORU compensation measure requirements?
CORU specifies two pathways:
- Aptitude Test
- Period of Adaptation (PoA) – Adaptation grade codes only apply to PoA applicants
Why can a recognised qualification still require adaptation?
A qualification may meet entry requirements but still present gaps/ deficits against CORU Standards of Proficiency. These gaps/ deficits must be successfully addressed through a PoA prior to registration.
Does this apply to new graduates (from this jurisdiction) awaiting registration?
No. These codes do not apply to new graduates within this jurisdiction. They are only for candidates formally required by CORU to complete a PoA.
Who oversees the Period of Adaptation?
There is no centralised national application process. Instead:
- PoA arrangements are service-led
- Subject to service need and capacity
- Approved by the relevant service line manager and linked to employment.
- Candidates recruited into a PoA role – on the condition that they complete the PoA programme and obtain CORU registration, and subsequently transition to a suitably funded position.
Can non-EEA candidates apply?
Candidates must be eligible for CORU registration and hold a decision letter requiring compensatory measures.
Non-EEA candidates are not eligible to apply, as they would need to meet the relevant visa and employment requirements.
How long does the Adaptation Grade apply?
The grade is assigned for up to 12 months, allowing sufficient time to complete the PoA.
What are the minimum eligibility criteria?
Candidates must:
- Hold a CORU recognised qualification (subject to compensatory measures)
- Be undertaking a PoA under supervision of a CORU registered HSCP professional
- Be employed under the relevant Adaptation Grade Code
- Be remunerated at the applicable grade for the duration (up to 1 year)
Important to note:
- Adaptation Grade Codes apply only to candidates undertaking a CORU mandated PoA
- Employment is conditional on successful completion of the PoA and subsequent CORU registration
- Recruitment is service/region led
- CORU decision letters are the primary source of verification for eligibility
