What is Intern Year?

Intern Year is the first year of clinical training after graduating from medical school and is a mandatory step for doctors beginning their careers in Ireland.

During this supervised training year, interns gain hands-on experience in patient care while developing the professional, clinical, and communication skills needed for a successful medical career.

On successful completion, doctors receive a Certificate of Experience from the Medical Council of Ireland, allowing them to progress to further training and career opportunities.

What Will You Experience?

Intern Year combines education, training, and clinical responsibility within a supportive learning environment.

Interns work as part of multidisciplinary clinical teams and gain experience across a range of healthcare settings.

Every intern completes rotations in general medicine and general surgery, as well as placements in specialties such as emergency medicine, paediatrics, psychiatry, anaesthesia, radiology, general practice, or obstetrics and gynaecology.

Academic and Professional Development Opportunities

Interns have access to a variety of supports designed to enhance their learning and career development, including training support schemes and educational funding opportunities. Those interested in research, leadership, or education can apply for the Academic Intern Track, which provides a dedicated three-month project alongside clinical training. Participants gain valuable experience in clinical research, medical education, or healthcare leadership and management while developing skills that support future career progression.

 

Your Next Steps

The HSE runs an annual national recruitment campaign for internship positions, typically opening in October for posts commencing the following July. Following successful completion of Intern Year and the award of a Certificate of Experience, doctors can apply for registration on the Trainee Specialist Division or General Division of the Medical Council and progress to roles such as Senior House Officer (SHO) as they continue their postgraduate medical training journey.

The recruitment campaign for Medical Intern Training in Ireland, commencing in July 2027, is expected to open in October 2026. Exact campaign dates will be confirmed at a later date.
