A porter is a vital member of the healthcare team, ensuring patients, equipment, medical samples, records, and supplies are safely and efficiently transported. This support allows healthcare professionals to focus on delivering high-quality patient care, making porters indispensable to healthcare services.
There are multiple entry routes to becoming a porter:
- Obtain at least a grade H6/O6 in a minimum of five subjects in the Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme
- Obtain a pass grade or minimum of 120 credits in the Leaving Certificate Applied Programme
- Hold a health skills or healthcare qualification at QQI Level 5 on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) or a comparable qualification. Click here for further information.
- Previous experience working as a porter for one year full time (or an aggregate of one year’s full time) in the last five years
- Previous experience in a relevant health & social care setting for one year full time (or an aggregate of one year’s full time) within the last five years.
